King of Spain Felipe VI Meets with Wang Yi

On February 19, 2024 local time, King of Spain Felipe VI met with visiting Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Madrid.

Felipe VI asked Wang Yi to convey his sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping, saying that fifty years ago, his father and the then Chinese leadership jointly opened diplomatic relations between the two countries. Over the past 50 years, Spain and China have enjoyed rapid development of bilateral relations, smooth progress in practical cooperation and closer personnel exchanges. Good relations with China are vital for Spain, Europe and the world, and Spain is ready to explore more new areas of cooperation with China. The world today is undergoing volatility and ongoing conflicts. Important initiatives such as building a community with a shared future for mankind and the Belt and Road Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping have brought peace, development and hope to the world. Felipe VI expressed his hope and belief that China, as a major country, will further exert its positive influence to cool down tensions and bring stability to the turbulent world.

Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping's warm greetings to Felipe VI, saying that last year, the two heads of state exchanged congratulatory messages on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Spain, and laid down strategic guidance for bilateral relations. Despite the complex and profound changes in the international situation, the deep friendship between China and Spain remains unchanged, along with the tradition of mutual respect, mutual trust, equal treatment, and win-win cooperation. China appreciates the Spanish royal family's friendly policy towards China and supports Spain's efforts to safeguard its national unity and ethnic solidarity. China believes that Spain will continue to share mutual understanding and support with China on issues concerning each other's core interests. China is ready to carry forward the China-Spain friendship, strengthen the alignment of development strategies, and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with Spain, so as to promote sustained, sound and steady development of bilateral relations.

Wang Yi said, with President Xi Jinping at the helm, China is now advancing Chinese modernization on all fronts through high-quality development. The march toward modernization of more than 1.4 billion people will be huge progress for human civilization, and will also bring great opportunities to the world. History has proved and will continue to prove that a developing China is a growing force for peace and an increasing factor for stability. Both China and Spain are time-honored countries with diverse cultures and inclusive societies. The two countries share the same or similar views on major issues. China is ready to work with Spain to promote dialogue and cooperation among countries, rise above contradictions and differences, build a community with a shared future for mankind, and better address global challenges.

During his visit, Wang Yi also had talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón and Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares Bueno respectively.
