Wang Yi Meets with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Stéphane Séjourné
2024-02-17 23:00

On February 17, 2024 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Stéphane Séjourné at the latter's request on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

Wang Yi said that China-France relations are now maintaining a sound momentum of development. The two countries recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France with great grandeur. Sixty years ago, China and France broke the ice of the Cold War and were among the first to establish diplomatic relations, which steered the international landscape in the right direction of dialogue and cooperation. Facing the resurgence of the Cold War mentality and the rising danger of bloc confrontation, China and France, as independent major countries with global influence, should strengthen dialogue and cooperation, work together towards the shaping of a multipolar world that is peaceful, stable, equal and orderly, and embark on the next 60 years of China-France relations with a positive and uplifting attitude.

Wang Yi said that China is willing to maintain high-level exchanges with France, make good preparations for another meeting within the three high-level dialogue mechanisms, namely the strategic dialogue, the economic and financial dialogue and the dialogue on people-to-people exchanges, and strengthen parliamentary exchanges. Both sides should take the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France and the Year of Culture and Tourism as opportunities to foster a new boom in people-to-people and cultural exchanges, enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, increase direct flights, and facilitate personnel exchanges. China supports France in hosting a successful Paris Olympics. Noting that pragmatic cooperation between China and France has yielded fruitful results, he said the two sides should strengthen synergy and further unleash the potential of cooperation. The French side is welcome to continue to make good use of the mechanism of "from French farms to Chinese tables" to promote the export of more quality farm produce from France to China. Wang Yi expressed the hope that the French side can provide a fair, transparent and sound business environment for Chinese enterprises to develop in France. China and France both support multilateralism and should support each other's multilateral initiatives. Wang Yi expressed the hope that France will play a constructive role in the sound and stable development of China-EU relations.

Séjourné said that the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between France and China is of great significance. France is ready to take this opportunity to enhance high-level exchanges and expand cooperation in diverse fields such as trade and economy, people-to-people and cultural exchanges, tourism, new energy, climate change response and the conservation of biological diversity. The French side reiterates its adherence to the one-China policy, and will continue to stick to strategic independence, and oppose "decoupling and severing of industrial and supply chains".

The two sides also had an exchange of views on a series of international and regional topics.
