Chinese Envoy Assures Support in Battle Against Malaria

Chinese Ambassador accredited to Liberia Zhou Yuxiao has assured that his government would continue to support the malaria control health program in the country.

He gave the assurance Monday when he spoke at the end of a one-day training workshop for eleven Malaria Laboratory Technicians from various medical institutions at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Monrovia.

Ambassador Zhou said the workshop was geared towards shaping the skills of laboratory technicians catering to malaria patients.

He observed that the disease could be controlled and prevented with the collective efforts of government and communities.

"Try to clean, your surroundings in order to avoid mosquitoes because they are dangerous to our health," he noted.

He then called on community dwellers to carry out massive campaign to sensitize their fellowmen on the need to keep their environment clean.

For his part, the Manager of the Malaria Control Program, Tolbert G. Nyenswah lauded the Chinese Government for its continuous assistance to Liberia's health sector.

He said the training of the laboratory technicians would go a long way in diagnosing malaria cases at various health centers.

Nyenswah indicated that since the establishment of the malaria center at JFK, the Chinese Government has donated several computers, microscopes and other machines that were needed to diagnose malaria cases properly.

Also speaking, Deputy Health Minister Moses Pewu urged Liberians to make use of their malaria nets in order to safeguard themselves from the infection.

He said the Minister of Health would continue to appeal to donors for assistance to fight against malaria because according to him, to wipe out the disease is not an easy thing.
