2022-01-10 23:02

On January 9, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris in Colombo.

Peiris said, Sri Lanka and China enjoy traditional and special friendly relations and are the sincerest friends. That a friend in need is a friend indeed is the eternal theme of bilateral relations. Sri Lanka and China have conducted all-round cooperation in various areas, with close communication between the two governments, frequent inter-party contacts and active people-to-people exchanges. Sri Lanka is highly satisfied with the current state of bilateral relations. Last year, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued commemorative coins for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC). This unprecedented arrangement fully reflects the close ties and deep friendship between the two countries. Sri Lanka will always remember that China has provided substantial and strong support for Sri Lanka's economic development and national development, and brought great benefits to the Sri Lankan people. Sri Lanka will continue to firmly adhere to the one-China policy, support China's just propositions on international occasions, and oppose any attempt to politicize the pandemic.

Wang Yi said, China and Sri Lanka are good friends and partners who have always trusted and supported each other. China-Sri Lanka friendly relations are rooted in the traditional friendship between the two countries and also benefit from the spirit of the Rubber-Rice Pact characterized by independence, self-reliance, unity and mutual support in spite of pressure and difficulties. The pandemic has not affected our bilateral relations, and our friendship has been further enhanced through the joint fight against the pandemic. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued commemorative coins for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, which reflects the sincere friendship and full trust of Sri Lanka toward China. China is ready to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with Sri Lanka and constantly inject new impetus into the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership.

Wang Yi appreciated Sri Lanka for upholding justice in international affairs and supporting China in safeguarding its core interests. He said, China is ready to work with Sri Lanka to jointly oppose politicizing the COVID-19 pandemic and using origins tracing as a tool, stick to the right direction of solidarity in the fight against the pandemic, and jointly safeguard international equity and justice.

Wang Yi also said that during my visit to several Indian Ocean island countries this time, I feel that all island countries share similar experiences and common needs, with similar natural endowment and development goals, and have favorable conditions and full potential for strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation. China proposes that a forum on the development of Indian Ocean island countries should be held at an appropriate time to build consensus and synergy, and promote common development. Sri Lanka can play an important role in this regard.
