People's Republic of China Breaks Records: Brings Little China to Liberia
An Article by Ekena Wesley

As a renowned columnist in Liberia, Mr. Ekena Wesley recently published his another well-composed article, People's Republic of China Breaks Records: Brings Little China to Liberia, resonating with the Dedication of the New Chinese Embassy on March 24, 2009, in his Patriot's Diary column of the Heritage newspaper. Here is the article from Mr. Ekena Wesley.

If the people of this country were to stop in order to re-think the tolling of diplomatic bells on Liberian soil, Tuesday, March 24, 2009 was that moment when nearly 400 compatriots of this small West Africa nation, foreign dignitaries and you name them, converged on the Congo Town newly-built and architecturally embellished masterpiece of an exuberant Chinese modernity. The Chinese have uniquely built several historically memorable structures in various parts of the country, which reminds us vividly that there is a legacy after all.

We in this country will remember China contextually in a number of spheres and importantly as this nation becomes engrossed into the frenzy of reconstruction and national renewal. China has become a pace-setter in the building of an elaborate diplomatic complex on this soil. This is the first time ever that such huge facility has been built for the accommodation of an Embassy and diplomatic staff quarters. We are glad that China has taken the lead and we expect others to follow.

Interestingly, we have been driving past this monstrosity for the last several months while Chinese engineers and technicians worked round the clock to complete on schedule one of the most magnificent engineering galore in Liberia amid the 21st century. The complex is a reflection of a concrete embodiment of Chinese products, which engrained historical identity of the good people of China as well as some monumental atonements of Chinese cultural diversity.

We want to welcome this idea for a number of reasons. The initiative adds to the beautification of the city or our suburb. Realistically as the structures were bellowing during the construction phases, it was obvious that some coloration was beginning to take shape. The kind of shape we are referring to brought to light inviting images of a masterful quality of architectural engineering. This is indeed a huge investment that we must be proud of as a country. It means our foreign partners are convinced that this country is truly committed to consolidating the peace.

When a powerful country like China is able to make a determination to invest heavily into the construction of an Embassy complex to the tune of millions of dollars in a country just emerging from decades of war, we have something to celebrate folks. The good people of Liberia must come to the realization that China is dedicated to the partnership that characterizes our relationship.

Early this week all that has been taking place beyond the scene – was graciously unveiled before hundreds of guests as a manifestation of what the Chinese have done along these shores with the understanding of ensuring they have a befitting Embassy complex. We did not in any way contribute to the carving out of the design, but our admiration for such genius-incensed work suggests the Chinese did mean well for hosting its diplomatic staff in the best cum qualitative abode. It is engineering at its best and we want to acknowledge this creativity.

In our very myopic thoughts, it is no doubt we have come to see various construction projects within and out of this country. The Chinese got it absolutely correct. If we were only to do a narration on the fence of the Embassy complex, it would require a carefully assembled documentary, let alone offices and diplomatic staff living quarters. Our preference for the kind of title coined stems from the fact that this is an Embassy complex – where diplomats representing the interest of the People's Republic of China will domicile. It is China in Liberia and surely represents just everything to say the least.

The Chinese people – in appreciation of their rich culture – do always seize the opportunity to showcase China invariably to the rest of the world. They do so through their songs, beliefs, tourist sites, architecture, diverse Chinese-made products, etc. The PRC has indeed brought Little China here and they have come to stay. Their stay is being felt as constructively as possible. Chinese investments are springing up all over the place in a bid to contribute to our country's economic growth and recovery. The Chinese are investing in education, involved in road construction, poised to take over what used to be Bong Mines, which would mark the possibility of getting the Mount Coffee Hydro restored. The list continues on and on.

A lot of foreign embassies folded up as conflict raged in Liberia while some stayed and remained as we wrestled with tribulation. New things have started to happen for the better and we are glad that has positioned herself as one of Liberia true partners. We want to see more of such Embassy complexes constructed by Nigeria, France, United Kingdom, The European Union, Holland, Canada, etc. It was not simply about the formal opening of the Embassy Complex as guests who joined in a draw organized by the Chinese Mission went home smiling. There were a lot of give-away items for guests who participated in the draw.

As we celebrate Little China, we have a duty to reflect within the spirit of our Liberianness. China has emerged a great nation cum world force on the international scene because of the resolve and resilience of its people. The Chinese people have become a success story for the rest of the world to emulate. Although a Third World Country – China is a fine example of how any nation that sets its vision can achieve if the will and commitment are marshaled appropriately.

Today, the Chinese can speak of an Embassy they can call their own in Liberia. We want to salute the People's Republic of China for the foresight and for immediately embarking on such a big investment. As we have won the confidence of the Chinese to make this break, which seeks to ignite hope for our country, all and sundry are encouraged to explore similar frontiers.

Little China brings about social revival, enthrones diplomatic certainty and builds in our foreign partners a sense of security to want to do business in a country as ours that is so abundantly rich. Let this new dimension in the psyche of Little China mentality kindles respect that Liberia is indeed back to business. We are not referring to the business of empty politics, but that which will bring pride and strengthen the growth and development of our people and country. Well done, China for setting the pace as we watch closely to see others follow.
