Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao Holds National Day Reception

On September 29, 2007, the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia H.E. Zhou Yuxiao held National Day reception at the SKD Stadium celebrating the 58th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The President of Liberia, Mme. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President pro-tempore of the senate, more than 10 cabinet ministers,senators and members of House of Representatives and other important government officials attended the reception. Also attending were senior officers and peacekeepers from UNMIL and representatives from the UN family in Liberia, diplomatic envoys to Liberia and Chinese nationals working in Liberia. 

 

In his speech at the reception, H.E. Mr. Zhou Yuxiao, commended Liberia for the progress made since the democratically elected government took office in January 2006.

 

Ambassador Zhou said: "the policy of national reconciliation has produced expected results; economic reconstruction is gaining momentum; the budget for the current fiscal year is increased by nearly 50 percent over the previous year; the lives of the people are being improved gradually and sanctions on timber and diamond exportation were lifted".

 

He said that it is gratifying to see that China-Liberia relations have grown rapidly since the resumption of diplomatic ties in 2003. There have been regular high-level visits, which enhanced our mutual understanding and trust and set guidelines for a new type of strategic partnership between China and Liberia and satisfactory progress has been witnessed in the bilateral cooperation in political, economic, agricultural, health and educational fields.

 

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf also addressed the reception, stressing that the Government of Liberia would resist any person or group undermining the One-China Policy in Liberia.

 

She reiterated the Government of Liberia would remain steadfast, unequivocal and determined to uphold, preserve and pursue the policy.

 

The President pointed out that no amount of pressure exerted on her government by any individual, group of people or nations would make the country to change her mind or switch from that firm decision.

 

The Liberian leader said she was appreciative of the countless assistance that the government of the People's Republic of China continues to give to the government and people of Liberia and she was more satisfied with the joint partnership of the Governments of the People's Republic of China and the United States of America in the expansion of the University of Liberia Fendell Campus.

 

A photo exhibition on China's recent development and a cultural performance given by an art troupe sent by the Ministry of Culture of China added a great of warm festival mode to the event.
